Profile

Phil Parkes (born 8 August 1950, Staffordshire, England) is a former goalkeeper who played 344 games for both QPR and West Ham in a career which spanned 21 years. He started his career at Walsall and Wolves before moving to QPR in 1969. After just one reserve game Parkes was put straight into the team helping them to promotion in 1973 and becoming an important part of the mid seventies Rangers side that few would argue is the best ever seen. Parkes was part of the QPR team that reached the last eight of the FA Cup in 1974 and were League runners-up to Liverpool in 1976. Parkes was sold to West Ham United in 1979 for £565,000, a world record for a goalkeeper at the time. Phil enjoyed more successes winning the FA Cup and stayed with West Ham for most of the 1980's. He left to join Ipswich in 1989 before moving into coaching. Phil was back at QPR with Gerry Francis in 1992 as a goalkeeping coach, a role he enjoyed and he has continued to coach young goalkeepers ever since at a variety of clubs including Ipswich Town. Phil was also capped for England.
