Summary
Initially an amateur with Notts County, Ray Clemence joined Scunthorpe United in August 1965, the division three club handing the teenager the first of his 758 league starts. Then in June 1967, Liverpool swooped to bring Clemence to Anfield.

For two years the deputy for Tommy Lawrence and it was in the 1970-71 season that the agile ‘keeper came of age, an extended run coinciding with “The Reds” reaching that season's FA Cup Final.

His first experience of life at football's top table, he would soon become accustomed to success as the club that Shankly built came to dominate at home and in Europe.  Increasingly recognised as a top-line performer, it was not long before appearances for England's Under-23 team were followed by back-to-back games for the senior side.

Invariably competing with Peter Shilton for the chance to represent England, at club level there was no disputing Ray Clemence's claim to the goalkeeper's jersey, challengers coming and going until, in August 1981, a £300,000 move to Spurs finally brought to an end a fruitful 14-year association with Merseysiders.  By then at 33 years of age, he had certainly bowed out at the top, as his final match for Liverpool was the 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the 1981 European Cup Final.

Still an international ‘keeper, Clemence's first season at White Hart Lane saw him add still further to his bulging collection of winners' medals, an FA Cup triumph going some way to making up for the disappointment of losing the 1982 League Cup Final to his former club, Liverpool.

In the history of English Football only 10 men have made more League appearances than Ray Clemence, testimony indeed to the player's standing as one of the game's all-time goalkeeping greats. Ray is now the goalkeeping coach and youth identifier for the English national team, he sits along side Sven in all major internationals. His son Steven is now with Birmingham City.
