Summary
'The King' is how they still refer to Denis Law in the city of Manchester where he played the bulk of his distinguished club career for Utd, in two spells, as well as City

It was a career that is the stuff of legend and that is exactly what Denis is, a legend. With lightning reflexes, quick feet, and head, he had the ability to convert the smallest of chances into a goal. Denis Law was one of the most exciting players in Europe in the 1960s.

Born in Aberdeen, Denis played his first game in the Football League aged just 16, becoming the youngest ever debutant for Bill Shankly's Huddersfield Town. His debut was on Christmas Eve 1956, in the 2-1 win away to Notts County. Denis never scored that day but within 48 hours he netted in the return game, at Leeds Road, in a 3-0 victory.

The final goal of his career was the typical, cheeky, back-heel that ensured Manchester City's 1-0 win over United, confirming his old club's relegation from division one, on 27th April 1974.

In the 18 years between those special goals Denis proved to one of the most prolific of post-war goal-getters. He scored more than 300 goals from nearly 600 games, including a record 41 FA Cup goals and 28 in European competitions that also saw him record a ‘British Best' of five hat-tricks.

Denis left Huddersfield in March 1960 when Manchester City paid a British record £55,000 for him. After two years in that first spell at City, Denis, with exactly 25 goals in 50 games, joined Italian club Torino in the first transfer of a British player that went into six figures, a reported £125,000. After 13 months Denis was on his way back to Manchester, this time United, when Sir Matt Busby paid the first ever six-figure fee by a British club to take him to Old Trafford.

When it came to showmanship Denis Law wrote the book. After sending the ball into the back of the net, with foot or head it mattered not, his arm would shoot skywards, clutching the cuff of his shirt, to signal yet another strike by `The Lawman'. Others tried to copy that gladiatorial salute but it was obvious there was only one Denis Law.

Denis enjoyed his greatest success, in terms of trophies, during his 11 years at Old Trafford. He started to repay the record fee Busby splashed out on him by immediately, helping United win the FA Cup in 1963, when he scored the first goal at Wembley to set United on the way to a 3-1 win over Leicester.

In his first season with United, Denis netted 23 goals in 38 games. In 1964 he was the highest paid player in Britain and was voted European Footballer of the Year. Denis's goals helped United win the first division title in 1965 and again in 1967, but injury kept him out of the club's greatest triumph, the 1968 European Cup Final win.

After more than a decade with United, Denis moved back to Maine Road, on a free transfer, and such was the resurgence in form he enjoyed that, at the age of 34, he won a place in Scotland's squad for the 1974 World Cup Finals where he won the last of his 55 caps against Zaire, 16 years after becoming the youngest ever Scottish international on a scoring debut against Wales.
