A tall, powerful leader-of-the-line player, Martin Chivers scored over 200 league goals and averaged a goal every other game for his country, yet he was unlucky to be in his prime at a time when England failed to qualify for the latter stages of the World Cup.

Starting out with his hometown club, Chivers was just 17 years old when he signed for Southampton.  Then playing in the old second division, “The Saints” were nevertheless enjoying an upturn in fortunes and had recently been promoted from division three.  Then, in the 1965-66 season, Southampton reached division one for the first time, 30 goals from the young Chivers contributing hugely, while ensuring the forward's status as the second division's top scorer.

An Under-23 international since the 1963-64 campaign, Martin Chivers continued to progress and, in January 1968, Tottenham Hotspurs broke the British transfer record, paying £125,000 to bring the player to White Hart Lane.  Initially, Spurs' new signing struggled with injury and it was not until the 1970-71 season that Chivers' latent potential began to be fully realised along with a maturity that was crystallised in February '71.

First he made his debut for England in a 1-0 win over Malta in Valletta, then just weeks later he scored both Tottenham Hotspurs goals as the North London side beat Aston Villa 2-0 to win the League Cup.  Two years later, Spurs won the trophy again while, in 1972, European glory was claimed when a Martin Chivers' brace helped defeat Wolves in an all-English UEFA Cup Final.  Meanwhile, Chivers was also making his mark at international level, spearheading England's attack with aplomb right up to that fateful night, in October 1973, when a 1-1 Wembley draw with Poland cost Sir Alf Ramsey's side the chance of playing in the 1974 World Cup Finals.
