Phil Neal is a player with a staggering record of success, largely mapped out during his 11-year career with the great Liverpool side of the 70s and 80s. He is also England's most capped right back of all time. Phil started his League career with Northampton Town in December 1968, predominantly playing in a midfield role but with the versatility to fill a range of positions. He was bought by the late, great Bob Paisley for £65,000 in October 1974 to replace 60s l egend Chris Lawler as Liverpool's right back.

With some big boots to fill he was nonetheless thrown in at the deep end, making his Liverpool debut in the white heat of the Merseyside derby – a game where his deserved reputation for unflappability was born. Following his second appearance in December 1974, he completed a remarkable run of 366 consecutive league games for Liverpool stretching until October 1983, usually at his favoured right back position, although his cultured passing made him a very useful midfielder. He also maintained a useful goal tally as Liverpool's cool, clinical penalty taker.

During this scintillating 11-year spell at Liverpool, Phil won virtually every honour available, with the exception of the FA Cup , including eight league titles, four league Cups, four European Cups and the UEFA Cup. In fact, Phil is the only man to have appeared in all five of Liverpool's European Cup finals and the only player to score in more than one.

Throughout much of his career Phil was also an England regular, winning 50 caps and scoring 5 goals. Phil finally left Liverpool halfway through the 1985/1986 season to join Third Division Bolton Wanderers as player manager. He is undoubtedly one of Liverpool's greatest ever players, providing incomparable consistency during the club's most successful period. Indeed, Irchester-born Phil Neal is one of the most highly honoured players in European football history.
